To all our Pavilionites and Pavilionettes. WHAT A YEAR IT'S BEEN SO FAR! We just wanted to extend our heart felt gratitude to every single person who's donned a frock, put there slap on, trawled through the streets hailing taxis and danced around there handbags all night in support of Box Pavilion and subsequently local venues that play live music. Without the unflailing support of all our followers it's undoubtedly true that many of the venues we've performed at may not have even noticed us. We often get notifications through where our followers have suggested us to venues looking for bands and we've followed these up and often with a great outcome so we thank you all for the great support you offer to us. Word of mouth is a fantastic and ever important driver in the local music industry and we can only ask that you continue your support and in return we promise to give 200% effort at every performance we give and strive to become one of the greatest bands in Lincolnshire - and yes we believe we can be. So to all you Pavilionites and Pavilionettes, again thank you and WE SALUTE YOU!! Hi everyone! REVIEWS WANTED!! We thought it was about time you told us what you think! To find out more about the venue and thier Christmas dates check out the website at www.habroughhotel.co.uk - it's a great place to have your christmas parties - hope to see you all there!! Well here we are the box pavilion band is up and running this is my small blog btw am Tom the drummer yes that's right a drummer can write. It's a great thing to be playing with a great bunch of lads who put a lot of effort into entertaining you and also helping you either get your imaginary microphone , air guitar or even your air drums out.
Just wanted to say the band is in a great position and playing really well and we are all really enjoying it. Well that's me signing off for now as am talking rubbish, hope to see many old and new faces in the future at a Box Pavilion gig near you. So here goes people…our first band blog! Now...what to write?!? Well, I thought it might be interesting to kick the blog off and tell you how I, Stuart, got into this position in the first place and how other aspiring (but often nervous) musicians and singers can do the same. And when I say ‘this position’, I am fully aware that we are only a local covers band, and some may say not in a position to give advice, but please think of this as something to read rather than something to learn from just for now! Before ‘all this’, I used to work in a pub and saw all sorts of live acts come and go and often wondered what is would be like to be in front of the audience rather than in it. As my bio mentions, I had attended many karaoke’s, singing songs I pretty much knew, and more to the point knew I could sing, which to be honest was a fairly limited list, if you can call it a list. And through a later job was asked to take part in a couple of local charity based ‘Stars in their Eyes’ competitions (which I never won btw!). Jumping a few years to the middle of 2012, I’m married now and I have a beautiful baby girl on the way and it’s been a long time since I’d even thought about singing, but over a small period of time I just decided I want to try it, I want to be a singer. Spurred on greatly I imagine by the many television talent shows on nowadays, The Voice UK in particular. Never had I seen a show where it didn’t matter who you were or what you looked like, you’d be judged purely on what you sounded like alone and I thought that was great. Watching it, I would find myself singing out loud in front of the TV and feeling increasingly jealous that these people are being seen doing what they love doing, and yes I did mutter the infamous words on more than one occasion…”I could do that!” Enough to say it isn’t the fame I wanted, I just wanted to be a part of something musical before it got too late in life and my voice and rugged mancunian good looks had all but gone. So I started looking online and googling ‘Bands in Scunthorpe looking for singers’, and a few sites came up, not many. One of which was a site called Join My Band, a great site to look for local like-minded people wanting to start an act, band or find replacement band members. I replied to a couple of people’s posts but nothing really came of it, but in early 2013, I found a recently published post from a member going by the name of Davec20…I know what you’re thinking…”How imaginative!”. I replied and sure enough I got a message, a few messages later I found out his name was David and he wanted to start a band with his mate Graham, and so he invited me to one of the jam sessions they go to and told me to learn a few songs. The songs were Dakota by the Stereophonics and Use Somebody by Kings of Leon (And luckily yes, these were on my very short list of songs I already knew…Bonus!). I arrived at the venue as nervous looking as, well let’s say akin to a dog producing excrement! I arrived early and had no idea of who I was looking for, I didn’t know what this David or Graham looked like and had visions of them being two forty-something pot-bellied beer monsters with long hair and beards that you could lose a microphone in! However, shortly after I settled into my seat in the furthest corner from the music equipment, two spritely looking lads bounced through the door, I say bounced, more like walked! We all glanced at one another with the “is that him? / is that them?” look in our eyes, when David asked if I was Stuart and shook my hand. To cut a long story short, our performance came and went and at the time it felt amazing and went better than I had imagined it ever going…now, looking back, it was a mess - I forgot words, felt nervous, didn’t know what to do with the mic when I had nothing to sing, what to do when I had nothing to sing, how to react and even what to say when an applause happened…but…it happened…the people reacted positively to what we had just done, and this felt great! And so that’s how I became a part of this fantastic group of lads. I knew then that there was so much to look forward to, but it seemed to feel like an age away until we would be ready to gig - we had no bass player and only knew a grand total of three songs but had our first gig booked for May 2013! – We needed to move fast. But only three months later of dedicating a few hours a week here and there – here we are. We have a great catalogue of songs, and songs I never imagined I would have the range and ability to do, but you learn a lot when you push yourself, trust me. And going strong, a new website, gigs in the pipeline, gigs from recommendations, a small band of faithful followers and a whole lot of entertainment to offer them! So there – long but I hope of interest and maybe even gets the musical juices flowing. Thanks for reading and come back soon for more Box Pavilion Band Blogs! (Oh and before I go, I know you’re dying to know…I was Gary Barlow one year and Elton John the next…you see why I didn’t win? - And the image...well this is what came up when I googled 'Getting started with a band'...the wonders of Google!) |
